MV Wan Hai 503 Fire Off Kerala Sparks Environmental Alarm

June 09,2025

triggered a high-stakes maritime emergency off the coast of Kerala, India. On June 9, 2025, the 268-meter ship caught fire roughly 78 nautical miles southwest of Beypore Port, following a powerful explosion below deck. The vessel was en route from Colombo to Mumbai, carrying 2,128 tonnes of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo.

The Indian Coast Guard and Navy launched a rapid response, rescuing 18 of the 22 crew members, though four remain missing—from Indonesia, Taiwan, and Myanmar. The ship is listing at 10 to 15 degrees, with repeated explosions and thick diesel smoke complicating containment efforts. A salvage team and diver have been winched onto the vessel, and seven ships, along with aircraft and helicopters, are engaged in firefighting and search operations.

Authorities are racing to establish a towline and pull the vessel away from the coast to prevent a potential ecological disaster. While visible flames have been reduced, the fire remains active in the inner decks and near fuel tanks, posing serious risks to marine life and shipping routes.

This is the second major shipping incident off Kerala in under a month. On May 25, the Liberian-flagged MSC Elsa 3 sank with over 600 containers, including 13 marked as hazardous. That event triggered an environmental emergency and led to widespread cleanup efforts along the shoreline.

The MV Wan Hai 503 fire has reignited urgent conversations around cargo safety, fire suppression systems, and crew preparedness—especially as global shipping volumes and hazardous materials continue to rise.
